Dear nVidia, Could you please be more cooperative with Free Software community. I strongly believe that both will benefit!

feelz

just for the fun

Sergey Matveev

I hope that nVidia corporation will listen to a fast growing free software community. Nowadays nVidia produces high quality and cheap video adapters, but none of them are better to install that, for example, Intel build-int adapters, that already have perfect FREE drivers. I wanted to buy some of nVidia's cards, but using of "nv" driver is not pleasant.

Go on!

Please, do make the documentation & specs. freely available this will help a lot to develop good quality software ;-)

I've been a nvidia customer since the TNT. However, with no real open-source support from your side and since the official ATI support to the linux communitty, I'll go now for ATI until you change your mind. No linux support, no business with me.

Open Source drivers are the way to go. Go and beat ATI once and for all at their own game!

I don't buy NVidia, because I don't use proprietary software locking me in. In the past I mistakenly bought NVidia products, but used the free driver anyway, even before you dropped the support for my not very old card. I don't really care about your company, but if you release the free software driver (so that the developers of not just GNU/Linux and not just i386 platform could port, fix and use it), I may change my mind.

I'm an nVidia user for about 8 years now... And I like it :) The good thing is that old devices are supported, too. But that support would be even better if open drivers existed...

I use NVIDIA now, and want to use it in the future. Support yourself, please :)

Rui

I won't buy from nvidia that's for sure, not until they release documentation and source code.

Olivier Sessink

The last years I've always bought the card that had the best open source drivers. I hope to get more choice!

I agree - Please give out the specs. I went for ATI last time bought a laptop. And at that time it was only rumours that they would open up their specs.

The not so distant past has proven that publishing binary only drivers puts a company in a difficult position: there is always tension with the open source community and the kernel devs. Also it's a constant race to keep up with the kernel API changes. Besides no one knows the kernel world better than kernel devs themselves. That said I believe there are two ways out of this misery: open up the specs/driver, so that alternatives can be developed and properly maintained, resulting in a standards complaint, more stable and more efficient driver. If that's absolutely not possible, get your blob out of the kernel space and implement a proper user space driver. Nevertheless- even though AMD (ATI) has had a bad reputation in reference to its linux driver support, things will change rapidly with the open source driver gaining momentum and thus increasing the competition pressure on NVidia.
