With ATI now supporting open source developers with information, NVIDIA stand to be left out in the cold.

i bought the 8800gt and i plan on continuing to buy nvidia products but i would really appreciate for there to be open drivers , nvidia already beats ati almost all the time and with open source drivers there will be no reason not to recommend you to all that ask

I use an nVidia-based motherboard for the sole reason of quality standards... and Linux for the reason that Windows doesn't meet that standard. It would be excellent to have the best of both worlds. The fundamentally-limited drivers for Linux are almost enough for me to get a new (cheap) motherboard and sell the one I have to pay for it. Having a fully-functional driver could also open up possibilities for a Linux-based gaming market that is currently untapped. It would be awesome for nVidia to "lead the charge" on this end of things, and it could certainly give the company a competitive advantage in the long-term by creating standards by which games could be developed, ported, and otherwise created for the GNU/Linux platforms. GNU/Linux doesn't prevent proprietary drivers; but the community is anxiously awaiting a driver it can use to further develop the platform into a fully-functional and usable home system. 3D acceleration (and the release of documentation for programmers) would serve to accomplish this end, all without limiting any channel of profitability if done correctly.

Nvidia, I have enjoyed 3 different generations of your cards; TNT2, GeForce4, and GeForce 6. I have never been disappointed, but no longer wish to have to use a closed proprietary driver on my linux system to get the full 3d capabilities of your cards. Please open your driver source, or provide programming API's so that developers can write their own driver. The value of your cards is in the hardware's performance and stability, and I can't imagine you would suffer a loss in market share by opening your code. On the contrary, many linux enthusiasts buy nvidia because the proprietary driver worked better than ATI's proprietary driver. With ATI giving the community access, many nVIDIA buyers may now switch to ATI to get better support.
